Collage Continued

This week we continued working on our collages. I showed the students more examples of collages in hopes of giving them more ideas as they worked. It think it was successful because the collages that the students have made are great. They are interesting to look at and you can see their personalities come through as you look at their collages. Here are a few pictures.

Collage

Today was great. It was probably one of my favorite days so far. I think the students enjoyed it too. We collaged on the self portraits we made last week. For those who don't know exactly what collage is we learned about it in class. Collage can be paper, wood, foam, fabric and any other materials that are glued to a surface to create an interesting composition. Collage can focus on a particular theme (such as flowers or sports), a color, or even a feeling. We also talked about some important elements in art; texture and repetition. After all the learning the class started collaging or coloring their self portraits. We had colored paper, stickers, magazines, ribbon and tape to use. We ended up with some awesome art and a bit of a mess but it was well worth it. We will be working on these next time because we didn't finish today.

Self Portrait

We started a new project today that will last the next couple weeks.  We first learned about Leonardo da Vinci and looked at some of his drawings and paintings. Then we learned about drawing a self portrait. We talked about proportions of a face and a bit about what the eyes nose and mouth look like. The students had photos of themselves as reference to look at as they drew there own faces. It went well a few students were concerned about it looking exactly like them but they all did a great job and realized that it took da Vinci a lot of practice to make his faces look life like. Next week we will collage on our paper and put some color on our faces.
