Sculpture

You know it is a great day when a student yells "hello Miss. Stewart" at you before you even get in the school and when the first thing the students say to you is "I wish you could come everyday".

The students made sculptures out of modeling clay today. First we had a lesson on what sculpture is, what 3D means, what materials can be used to make a sculpture, and we talked about different ancient sculptures. I loved the sculptures the students made. They were all very unique and creative.
Here are some pictures!

Monster Mash

Today we made collaborative monsters to add to our Halloween house. In the art world we call this type of collaboration exquisite corpse. I am not sure why  it is called this but it makes it sound even more monsterish in my opinion. How it works is you have a sheet of paper that is split into three sections. The first student draws a head in the top section then they fold it back and pass it to a neighbor. Then the next student draws the torso. They fold that over and then pass it for a last time to a neighbor for the legs.  In the end you get a monster with two or three heads maybe five arms and tentacles for legs or what ever else the students are creative enough to draw. Mrs. Keeles class is especially creative so i will post some pictures of our monsters for you to see.

creepy crawly SPIDERS!

Today was a blast! We made spiders out of egg carton containers, pipe cleaners, and googly eyes.
First we talked about and described real spiders. The students used great adjectives to describe the spiders. We looked at trapdoor spiders, black widows, crab spiders and many more. I also introduced our Halloween House. We made a Halloween house out of card board boxes and we are using our art to decorate it. The students couldn't wait to go inside. Mrs. Keele had the awesome idea to string up some of the spiders on the box with fishing line to make them look like they were crawling on webs. The House looks great so far and we will add to it as we make more art. Here are some pictures of the project today.

ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM!

Today was my first day teaching Mrs. Keele's 3rd grade class and my first day ever teaching an elementary school class. It was Awesome and everything seemed to run smoothly. We learned about abstract expressionism. We learned how a single line can express emotion and how a painting doesn't always have to be of an object. The children were able to do their own abstract expressive paintings in fall colors. I was amazed at how quickly they developed into making creative pieces of art. They started out a bit timid but as they realized the possibilities of what they could make they got their whole bodies into it literally. They were using large brush strokes and eventually started using their hands.
Here are some beautiful examples of the expressive, abstract painting that we made.
